Close observation of historical examples of Islamic architecture and geometric patterns reveals an understanding and wide applications of proportional rectangles in the design of floor plans, wall elevations, windows, doors, arches, framed patterns, and more. Root rectangles are based on square root proportions, where incommensurable ratios can structure diverse design elements in different media through endless divisions, achieving visual unity of individual parts.
In the session, we will explore sequences of proportional rectangles and how they can be arranged to nest within one another. Using the examples of her work with geometry and ceramics, Katya will introduce the general principles which can be applied to approaching a blank sheet of paper or a wall. This will enable the participants to consider the relationship between individual design elements and whole compositions. We will begin to enquire how this modulating process can impart harmony, rhythm, and movement to different levels of composition in specific design applications.
